Ever wonder why the SNU posts it's newsletter on the web rather than sending it as an attachment to an email? The bottom line is respect for those receiving the email and the CAN SPAM act of 1997 and 2003. It is recognition that not everyone uses the same types of electronic systems. This includes things like type of computer, type software, memory capabilities, machine speed, network connection, and other issues. It is recognition of the use of spam filters and the concerns about unsolicited emails, especially those with attachments. It is recognition that some SNU members take advantage of the online newsletter to keep informed while they are traveling. That means they may have less reliable internet connections, less accessibility and more restrictions on download speeds.
An August 2012 email clearly outlines the problems another Unit had by sending their newsletter as an attachment to an email and why the SNU does not send newsletters via email attachment.
“I sent out the August edition of the Newsletter on 8/26. It was a very large file so it will take some time to download (patience may be a virtue here) and some of you did not receive your copy – either your server space did not allow receipt of that big a file (11M) or your server space was too full. If you did not receive the newsletter try clearing out some of your old (not needed) emails on your server and then send me an email and I will resend it. If that doesn’t work, Lynda will post it to our website when she gets home.... We are also going to see what we can do to make the file conversion from Word format to Adobe pdf less bulky.”
The SNU has also addressed the issue of “bulky” PDF's.
The SNU keeps it's newsletter to four pages with an occasional extra page as needed. Many other Units produce newsletters with anywhere from 6 on up to 20 or more pages.
The SNU uses links to web pages that provide more detailed information and pictures related to various items described in the newsletter rather than including it all in the newsletter itself.
The SNU minimizes extraneous and unrelated clip art and graphics. The content focuses on things related to the SNU, SNU members, Airstreams, and RV and camping topics. It does not use filler such as jokes, recipes, or articles on topics that are unrelated to the primary focus of the Unit.
The SNU makes an effort to use photos sparingly and to use smaller size photos. Again, links are provided for additional photos and photo galleries.
The SNU uses file conversion systems that decrease the size of the final PDF version of the newsletter before it is posted.
As a primary means of communication, the SNU feels an obligation to make the electronic version of the Unit newsletter accessible to everyone without any individual having to worry about file size or speed of download.

The SNU newsletter is available in a PDF format on the SNU website. An 'opt-in' mailing list is used to announce the availability of most currently published newsletter as well as when there are time sensitive changes or updates related to rallies or other information pertinent to SNU members. The 'opt-in' mailing list ensures we are sending emails only to those who have subscribed (chosen) this option and not to those who do not wish to receive such emails This system also enables subscribers to change their email address or unsubscribe at any time they choose.
Although the preferred method of receiving the on-line newsletter is through the subscription system, a second method is to use the RSS feed for the Zephyrs blog, http://sierranevadaairstreams.org/snuze/ This blog is where newsletter posting announcements are made along with other RV and SNU related items. A third method is to just keep an eye on the newsletter page of the SNU website to look for new issues online.

The SNU newsletter is primarily a communications tool for SNU members. The newsletter also acts as a promotional tool. As such, we encourage potential members, friends, and others interested in the Airstream lifestyle and the Sierra Nevada Unit in particular, to subscribe to the newsletter announcement list.
