Operational Notes

The following are concepts by which the Sierra Nevada Unit operates. They provide the basis for the decisions and actions of the SNU.

The SNU seeks to utilize all tools available including the Internet to ensure effective, efficient, and inclusive communications with its members. The premise behind the SNUs use of internet techologies is to keep it simple, cost effective, and easy to use and maintain by any member of the Unit. With this goal in mind, open source software is used. Html and Adobe PDF files which are commonly available compromise the bulk of the content of the website. No special or proprietary web application programs are used.

Goals of SNUs internet usage

Subscription based on-line newsletter
On-line vote and opinion polls
Current information resource

Communication – The Internet provides an excellent way to communicate with all SNU members regardless of their physical location. Current SNU materials such as the current rally schedule, list of Unit officers, meeting agendas and meeting minutes, treasurers reports, and rally pictures are posted for easy access. To ensure that all members have an opportunity to participate in the decisions of of the SNU, the bylaws were amended to facilitate on-line voting. Opinion polls and inquiry requests are also utilized to gain member input. The Unit newsletter is available on-line via a subscription service. Utilizing subscription gives each member who signs up control of their email information. It ensures that the newsletter abides by current spam considerations in that it is sent only to those people who have requested it.

SNU Archives – To ensure that the SNU history is not lost and is available to any member, the Unit has begun posting Unit documentation on the website. This documentation includes, newsletters, rally schedules, meeting minutes, letters, a pdf copy of the unit charter, photo galleries of past SNU rallies, and other materials. There is also a section dedicated to operational notes and one for the history of the SNU.

Promotion – The website has given the SNU visibility far beyond its local territory. It has been directly responsible for several new members including one in Nova Scotia, Canada. It has also connected the SNU with a researcher in England. The website has been responsible for Airstream owners outisde the SNU to learn about SNU rallies and activities and to even participate in rallies. The website URL is included on almost all SNU publications, documents, and stationary.

Copyright and trademarks

SNU is mindful of copyright and trademark issues. It seeks permission of any contributions to the website, including articles, photographs, and other documents. It ensures that maps and other materials posted on the website are open source and to the best of its ability not subject to any copyright issues. The footer of each web page includes a disclaimer and general description of the websites purpose and intent.

Considerations

The SNU is currently housed on a website belonging to SNU members. Space for the SNU is donated by these members as is the management and maintenance of the SNU site. This website is a private, non commercial site. As such the content the website is posted at the discretion and direction of the domain name owners.

The website that houses the SNU is used as a test bed by the members who own the site. The SNU has benefited in numerous ways from being guinea pig for much of this testing. These benefits include on-line payment of dues and kitty fees and on-line voting and opinion polls.

Resources

Since the SNU site was developed and is maintained by SNU members who utilize the Internet as part of their business, the procedures and guidelines used for the SNU are those established by these members.
