Recollections of Airstream and WBCCI

Dale (Pee Wee) Schwamborn

Dale Is the first cousin once removed of Wally Byam. His mother, Helen Byam Schwamborn was Wally's first cousin. Their fathers were brothers. Bert and Ray Byam.

Dale ran across our website in 2006 while doing a search on his mother. He has very kindly provided pictures an offered to answer question related to his memories of Wally Byam, his Mother and Airstream History. These pages may continue to develop over time so check once in a while to see:

“To Pee Wee Who accompanied me on my first and last Caravan.” Wally Byam

When Wally's book, Trailer Travel Here and Abroad was published he autographed a copy for me. At the time it was great to receive the book and to have him sign it for me. Only after his death did his remembrance in the book hit home. It became true, I was on his first and last Caravan. 1951 to Mexico and Central America, then in 1959 to Africa. Thank you Wally!

I have taken pictures from copies of photos, slides etc. and spruced them up in Power Point and then saved them as JEPG's – Dale Schwamborn

How Dale got the nickname Pee Wee

Pee Wee is a Caravan name from the past. Caravan wise, I like Pee Wee. It invokes many memories.

In early September 1951, before the 1st Caravan, I trekked with Wally through the High Sierras. We went in at Onion Valley and came out through Whitney Portal. There were five of us. Wally, Stel, Clive and Gareth Glassey and Dale. Wally gave me the moniker of Pee Wee on this trip. Of note Clive and Gareth went on the first Caravan as mechanics, workers and helpers to Wally.

July 4, 2011 was Wally Byam’s 115th birthday. The Oregon Unit hosted a rally in his hometown of Baker City, OR to celebrate his birthday and the opening of a Wally Byam exhibit in the Baker City Heritage Museum
