Wally did months, if not years of pre-planning for
the African Caravan. He talked to African travelers. He purchased
books written by travelers in Africa. He pondered maps looking for
roads and directions to take the Caravan. Wally also wrote to
embassies, tourist bureas, corporations and anyone that could advance
and enhance the 1959 African Caravan. He found the sights, the
activiites, the towns, and cities to visit.
>From all of
this knowledge Wally created the schedule. With the schedule the tour
was ready to present to the Airstream owners. Bulletins and details
were prepared by Helen Byam Schwamborn at Headquarters. Helen also
wrote letters, gathered information, sent introductions to national
and local governments. She made arrangements with shipping companies.
Yes, many, many days, nights, hours, months, and years went into the
African Caravan. Don't exclude toil, sweat, and callouses.
Here
are two schedules. The one is the finished daily guide for the
Caravan prepared before their departure. It looked great. Not a bad
Caravan. But was it realistic?

>From Cape Town to Cairo by Lillie
Douglass there is the actual day by day tour log with mileage. Please
note that the original schedule had the Caravan sailing from Suez,
Egypt on December 11, 1959. The Caravan was to be in Bethlehem,
Jordan for Christmas. It didn't happen. Check out what actually
happened from the account by Lillie Douglass.
Roads, events,
repairs, sightseeing and more added time to the trip.
Note from my Dad, from a telephone call from my Mother saying "Wally is Taking Pee Wee to Africa". Additional comments by Pee Wee
