In Memory of Gary Haskett

Gary passed away on December 24, 2021.

Bryan and I first met Gary in 2006 when Bryan noticed a new Airstream in a neighbors yard. Of course we had to go investigate. Gary and his wife Anita had just purchased a 2006 70th Anniversary edition Safari. They had visited an RV show here in Reno and saw this Airstream. They purchased it at the show. Needless to say, when we went to take a look at the new Airstream we told them all about the SNU and before long they became members. Not long after purchasing their Airstream, Gary drove it into the local dealer for some warranty work. By coincidence Jerry and Dyann were also at the dealer. Jerry thought Gary looked familiar and went to meet him. As it turns out Jerry and Gary knew each other from their younger days when both were living in Hawthorne.

Gary and his wife Anita were active participants in the SNU for 15 years. They attended numerous SNU rallies over the years. Gary and Anita attended the Region 12 rally in Jackson CA in 2011 along with other SNU members. Since they lived close to Bryan and I, they often caravaned to rallies with us. Sometimes, depending on the destination, Jerry and Dyann Thornburg joined in the caravan. Gary served as SNU President in 2015 and 2016.

G ary was always cheerful and always ready to lend a helping hand. Repair and maintenance is a common activity at SNU rallies. Gary always pitched in whether it was wiring, generator maintenance, heaters or anything else that needed attention. Gary also was a big help to Bryan with projects here at home. This included assisting in replacing the awning on our Airstream along with other friends and helping install a new roof vent. Repacking wheel bearing happened every year or so, both on his Airstream and our own. Gary was also one of the SNU ham radio operators. His call sign was KD0TA. He and Bryan and Jerry often used ham radio to communicate while caravanning to rallies.

Gary served in the Army with a post in Germany. He worked for AT&T in the midwest as a supervisor and has lived in Elko and Sparks areas for his telephone company service in Nevada. Camping was a lifelong activity for Gary. Before he and Anita bought their Airstream, Gary’s latest RV was a 5th wheel which he really liked. Gary was very active with his church. One of the projects he was involved in was assisting with the church food pantry. Some of the men from the church, including Gary often met for breakfast at the Hometown Cafe here in Lemmon Valley. Gary like to visit his many friends and often helped with various projects they were working on. Gary and Anita’s friends, Milo and Arlene came to visit us at a rally at Eagle Lake in 2017.

Gary was also a personal friend. We shared several activities with Gary and Anita over the years including events at their church, target practicing, BBQ’s and rootbeer floats. Gary came to our house every week or two, to have coffee and shoot the breeze with Bryan.

Gary had COPD but he never let it get him down or keep him from doing what he wanted to do. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
