Last rally of 2007

Thursday October 18 to Sunday October 21 2007. At this rally the SNU will be testing a new site. A BLM campground and off road trail head near Doyle, CA, about 45 miles north of Reno. The campground is called Ft Sage. and is about 5 miles east of US 395.

Directions to Ft Sage

Depart civilization at Laver Crossing north of Doyle, 2 miles from the north end of the Doyle loop and almost a mile north of the Shell station

Turn towards the mountains right where the passing lane starts going north

There will be signs but only after you make the turn

A mile and a half down Laver it T's into Hackstaff and the paved road is left behind- turn right (south)

Hackstaff is 40 mph gravel. Look for Fort Sage Road a mile ahead.

Fort Sage Road is well marked from both directions on Hackstaff - one of two pre-emptive signs on this route. nice wide roads and plenty of room to make the turn

One mile on 15 mph gravel - watch for hidden washboard!

Again - after the turn you get confirmation you made the right choice - look for the turn off Fort Sage Road in one mile to the trailhead

About a mile and a half off Fort Sage Road is the trailhead. Some grade, some sand maybe a 10 mph road.

Be sure and stop by the store in Doyle. It is a 100 year old slice of history. The store is part museum and part current day market. It also has hotel rooms on the second floor.

President's Ramblin's

Whew, another month gone. Lahontan was fun, we did find some good weather to be able to sit outside and shoot the breeze. Not mother nature’s breeze either, that would come soon enough and sent most people back inside their rigs. We were able to watch one car get stuck and have to be dug out. Luckily it wasn’t one of us. The winds did a lot of digging out for us, as many of the stabilizers were hanging in the air come Saturday morning. Gary’s area looked more like a basin. The wind managed to take a lot of the sand out from under his trailer tires also, looked real weird with the tires hanging in the air.

As brought to our attention earlier, the process of designing an electrical circuit for the charging of batteries is progressing. Kind of hard to get the right sequence of transfer switches going. The preliminary design incorporates Randy’s generators first, so he will have to make all rallies. It would be nice if he brought a bunch of extension cords also. He who doesn’t show up at the rallies is fair game in the ramblins.

Next month will be at Fort Sage near Doyle. It is an off road trail head so feel free to bring other toys. For those interested there is also the ability to do a little shooting if we are at least ¼ mile from the trail head, so feel free to bring that kind of toy also. I know the last will create a little concern but believe me all safety precautions will be observed. We will call it plinkin time.

I just read a newsletter from another unit and figured out what we were doing wrong. We didn’t sweep and mop the ground before we left. I thought the wind and rain did a pretty good job of it though. But that’s my redneck showing through. I believe everybody might have had to do a little sweeping out of their own rigs when they got home, maybe that will count. Gary had a little leak in the roof. He should have remembered while growing up that was called a shower, and when it puddles on the floor it’s called a bath. I remember when I would wait until it started raining then run out with a bucket of soapy water, wash the truck and let the rain rinse it off. That’s my lazy side. Course I guess you could just stand out in the rain and take your monthly shower also. Ah these days of modern conveniences. Those were the good old days. Maybe that’s why we like to do camping in out of the way campgrounds.

I thought I could use executive privilege and assign some work, but when certain members appeared with big sticks I changed my mind. Some of you may remember Rodney Dangerfield who got no respect, I don’t get no executive privileges either. The first year of my office is at a close, by the looks of it I will be doing a second year. I look forward to the office again. Remember October is the month for voices to be heard and opinions expressed as to how you would like to see the next year go. As always feel free to either call or email me with any suggestions or concerns.

I guess I had better close this ramblins, I am already getting stern emails that I am dogging it again. Of course if I didn’t get them time would surely just slip on by and I would forget. Hope to see you all at Fort Sage. Come spend the weekend or come for the day.

Jerry

September Rally

Due to a last minute change in plans the September rally was held at Lahontan Beach 7. Mother Nature provided quite a smörgåsbord for us. Thursday was perfect. We sat in the moonlight till around 8:30 pm enjoying the evening and sharing stories. Friday morning was calm and warm. By noon the wind started up and within an hour we were all hunkered down in our Airstreams watching the sand blowing all around us. The wind scoured out the sand around stabilizing jacks and wheels, several of which needed adjusting to return the trailers to level. The rest of the weekend was a mix of a little rain, some thunder and lightning, some wind, some calm periods and some beautiful clouds and sunsets. It was a great example of why the SNU doesn't cancel rallies unless there are road controls in place. There are almost always nice spells when we can get out, have a campfire, share a meal, or just sit and enjoy the out of doors and each other's company. Despite the weather we had a good turnout. Jerry and Dyann Thornburg, Wes and RoyLaine Warn, Gary Haskett, Bryan, Diane, and Anita Leipper, and guests, Gene and Carmen Baleme. Our pot lucks were great as usual although even more hap hazard due to the weather. Flexibility was the key. We were able to enjoy lunch and dinner outside on Saturday and even had a campfire. Rally discussions were wide ranging and imaginative. Jerry has an idea of trailer steps and is planning to draw out a concept. He, Gary, and Bryan discussed a grid system with automatic switching capabilities to hook up and exercise everyone's generators. The idea is to hook up all generators to all rigs to ensure a good load. When one generator runs out of gas the system switches to the next generator and so on till all are well exercised and out of gas. Gary discovered a ceiling leak and is now in the process of figuring out how best to fix that.

All in all a great time was had by all. To see the rally photo gallery go to the link listed at the top of the page.

We look forward to testing out a new rally site at Ft Sage near Doyle in October.

New members

Welcome to Donald and Jean Molde of Reno. They have a 2007 Safari SE 27ftFB. We look forward to seeing them at an SNU activity soon.

Welcome Home

Dale and Marge Grosch have rejoined the SNU. They moved to Washington State several years ago but have always kept in touch. Dale and Marge have been WBCCI members since 1975 and first joined the SNU in 1993. Dale and Marge are one of the reasons the SNU is still around. They have held almost every office, each of them serving terms as President, as secretary, publishing the newsletter, and any other duty that was asked of them. The Grosch's have always been active in WBCCI. They regularly attend International rallies and have volunteered for many duties including parking and assisting with the honey wagon detail. They have represented the SNU, carrying the flag and attending meetings. We are delighted to have Dale and Marge back again and hope they will be able to attend a rally in 2008.

Update on Twin Lakes

The photo galleries were not ready in time for last month's newsletter. The have now been posted. Thanks to Don Williams, David Strode, Roman Kreminski, Gene Baleme, and the Leippers, all who provided pictures of the Twin Lakes rally. These photographers also provided a lot of great pictures of Bodie, so much so we ended up with several photo galleries. The pictures have created a great virtual tour of Bodie. To see the rally and Bodie photo galleries go to the link listed at the top of the page.
