"A Lake in the 'Smokey Mountains'"

June 28, 2008

Thank you for your e-mail. We too very much enjoyed our visit with you all! (at the rally in Portola) We are still "camping" in the Clio area. The nearest fire, the Cold Fire in Plumas National Forest (actually a group of many fires), is 16 miles from here. (See photo attached from last Sunday night, a view of the fire from Graeagle. The other is "A Lake in the 'Smokey Mountains'".) It's been and still is very smokey here, although occasionally the airflow moves it elsewhere. Most of the time, you can't even see the nearby mountain ridges. Frankly, it's oppressive, but then we think of the fire fighters and the people in places like Myanmar and Central China and those nearer to the fires in NorCal, and we stop feeling sorry for ourselves. I'm so glad we're not allergic to pine pollen, because everything here is covered with a thick layer of it (as well as puffs of cotton from the cottonwood trees). We thought of going home early, but it's just as smokey (and hotter) in the valley.

So, we've been lying low, doing alot of cooking, eating, napping and reading: I'm on my 4th book! We're relaxed to the point of lethargy! (--the perfect vacation?) However, occasionally the air clears a bit and we get out and do something aerobic. We hiked the Lakes Basin with Clint & Kathy on Monday, paddled two lakes with another Airstream friend on Tuesday; yesterday we swam in Sand Pond; and today we bicycled in the Mohawk Valley. We're planning on doing some birdwatching in the Sierra Valley Marsh this evening and early tomorrow morning.
