January 2018 – Luncheon at Casa Grande

Don Williams

What a great start to the New Year; 19 members and guests shared food, friendship and stories at the Sierra Nevada Unit Luncheon at Casa Grande Mexican Cantina. We also welcomed new members Doug & Dawn Dale and returning member Dean Eveland’s first visit with us. Thanks to Terry Larson for finding a great spot to eat. I was encouraged by the support of Unit members and their anticipation of our rallies.

February 2018 – Luncheon at Bavarian World

Dyann Thornburg, SNU Secretary

The February SNU luncheon was a wonderful success. We had great food, good but cold weather and a lot of wonderful people attend. There were a total of nine of us: Gary and Anita Haskett, Susie Brown, Dean Eveland, Jeni Root and Jerry and Dyann Thornburg who attended. Brian Root ended up missing the luncheon because he had been up on Mt. Rose since 2 am grooming the slopes. He was sincerely missed as was everyone else who weren’t able to be there. We discuss upcoming rallies and I agreed to fix my cornered beef and cabbage for Saturday night at the rally coming up on March 15– 18, 2018. Since Saturday is St. Patrick’s Day I thought it was only fitting for us to do it that day and it seems to have become a March rally tradition. I asked for volunteers to fix cornbread and a few salads. So if you are planning to join us at the rally please bring cornbread, a salad or a desert for the potluck on the 17th. A few of us stopped by the deli on our way out and got pastries and sausages. Jerry and I decided to stop by and see how Bryan and Diane Leipper were doing after the luncheon and I took some apple strudel to share with them. Both of them appear to be doing well. Diane still has some issues to go through before she is able to walk without a cane but I think she’s on the road for a complete recovery and hope that they can make it to the March rally at Washoe Lake. Have a great month and we hope to see everyone for the SNU’s first 2018 rally.

April 2018 – Rally at Lahontan

Dyann Thornburg, SNU Secretary

Lahontan State Recreation Area – Read the write up from members Dyann Thornburg and Diane Leipper about Lahontan we, the SNU, really had a great time. Gail and I would love to have been included in the “we” but an unexpected tire tread loss forced us to turn around and head from home only 223 miles from the rally site. Enjoy Dyann and Diane’s write up and visit with us in June about our abbreviated trip! - Don Williams, SNU President

The weather for the April rally at Lahontan was just about perfect. Quite a change from many past April rallies. The good weather not only brought out a nice group of SNU members, for the first time in years there were a lot of other people who chose this weekend to go camping at Lahontan. As for the SNU, we were delighted that some of the newest members participated in the rally. For John and Joan Lapham and Doug and Dawn Dale, this was their first SNU rally. They are all new to Airstreaming and although they have done some previous traveling with their trailers, this rally provided a great introduction to SNU rallies. Other participants included Jerry & Dyann, Bryan & Diane, Gary & Anita, Gene & Carmen, and Jim & Roylaine. We also had some visitors. Gary & Anita’s friends came by on Saturday. Wheels & Doris came out on Saturday and joined us for dinner. [7 rigs and 18 people is great ed./pres.] Friday, we got pizza from a local pizza parlor in Silver Springs. That may become a tradition for Lahontan. Great pizza and no dishes/utensils needed. Saturday we had our usual shared meal with a variety of tasty entrees, salads and desserts.

Rally participants had a choice of all sorts of entertainment. Bird watching was especially interesting this year. There were a pair of Great Horned owls nesting in a nearby tree, two Canadian geese who weren’t shy at all came and stayed for a visit. We spotted a Bald eagle flying past one morning and several Red Tailed hawks also flying around. The Pelicans who are normally around weren’t this year but they could have been somewhere else on the lake. The reservoir was the fullest a lot of us have ever seen it and allowed us to sit right outside our rigs and watch the fish jumping which gave us the opportunity to guess where we’d see them come up next. Friday night, Doug, Dawn and Gene drove over to Ft. Churchill for a program on night life in the park.

Saturday, John and Joan toured Buckland Station and the Orchard. John also enjoyed several bike rides exploring the territory around Lahontan. Several members enjoyed hiking here, there and everywhere. Then, of course, there were the inspirational naps, reading and most of all visiting and catching up on plans and ideas.

(Thank you, Diane Liepper for giving me your notes and writing most of the above comments about the Lahontan rally.)

After Saturday’s potluck I (Dyann) gave a brief update to some things that are going on for the SNU. We have been required to change the location for the May 2018 rally. It will now be held at the Crocker Campground near Beckwourth, CA. The reason for the change is due to the Prosser Campground not opening until Memorial Weekend.

Crocker is a great campground with lots of wildlife to see. It’s a wonderful place to hike, adventure and get out and see nature at it’s best. it’s my understanding that the road is now finished and paved all the way to the campground so it should be an extremely easy commute. Several of us will caravan to the rally so if you would like to go with us please let us know so we can give you the details. The SNU will also be doing KFC on Thursday. Please let us know when you plan to arrive so we have an idea as to how many people will be joining us for dinner. You can let us know on Facebook, email or call us. We look forward to a great turnout and hope to see you there! Oh and please be sure to bring firewood so we can have our usual wonderful campfires. I also told the group why our president, Don Williams and first lady, Gail William couldn’t make it to the rally. Apparently while on their way to the rally one of the tires on their Airstream separated and damaged the trailer. They ended up having to turn around and go back home. Hopefully they’ll be able to get the repairs completed in time to join us for the June rally in the BLM campground at Eagle Lake. We look forward to seeing them there.

Have a great month everyone and hope to see you at Crocker Thursday, May 17th – Sunday, May 20th.

May 2018 - Rally at Crocker

Dyann Thornburg, SNU Secretary

Crocker Rally, Plumas National Forest - The May Crocker Rally was great! SNU members who attended the rally were: Gene and Carmen Baleme, Gary Haskett, Bryan and Diane Leipper, and Jerry and Dyann Thornburg. We had the entire campground to ourselves, which made it a quite and relaxing weekend.

The Thornburg’s motorhome, “The Albatross” had to have a new alternator and battery installed, delaying our arrival until Friday so the KFC dinner was postponed until Friday; it was held in the Albatross due to rain showers. Saturday we had our usual shared potluck outside. Bryan got fantastic pictures of the fog Friday morning that was in the campground.

The weather was beautiful on Saturday and Sunday; it allowed us to have a campfire for most of the day. There were a few sprinkles now and then but not enough to stop us from enjoying this group of long time SNU members. On Sunday as we were leaving, we saw a herd of antelope grazing in one of the meadows along side the road.

Diane Leipper

The weather forecast for the weekend didn’t look promising but that didn’t stop four SNU members from heading to Crocker Campground near Beckworth. Those four were Gary, Gene & Carmen, Bryan & Diane and Jerry & Dyann. As it turned out, there were a few showers Thursday evening, a very foggy morning on Friday, and a few scattered showers the rest of the weekend. Overall though we couldn’t have asked for better rally weather. Saturday and Sunday mornings were sunny with almost no wind. Perfect for a morning campfire and coffee. It seems we were the first campers to use Crocker this year. There were no recent tire tracks and no other indications anyone had been at the campground. We had the place all to ourselves.

Due to alternator problems, Jerry and Dyann didn’t make it on Thursday. They arrived Friday tired but all in one piece. Other than that, the only mechanical issue at the rally was that Gary had to do some tweaking on his generator. Between him, Gene and Jerry it was soon running smoothly and consistently. Bryan & Diane were enjoying their new hot water heater which with a little help from friends like Jerry and Gary had gotten installed prior to the rally. Best part of the water heater is the new inside switch. No more having to go outside to light the pilot. Gene’s rig didn’t seem to need any attention this rally.

Most of the rally was spent visiting, enjoy the beautiful scenery and peace and quiet of Crocker. We had our morning campfires and shared dinners. Saturday we had an impromptu lunch with hot dogs cooked over the campfire. We also introduced a few new flamingos to the SNU collection. Both Dyann and Diane had new flamingos to add to the yard art. Dyann had found some neat flamingo towels in Walmart and got a set for her and for Diane.

Sunday was another bright and sunny morning. We enjoyed one last campfire before heading home, a trip that was quite different from previous years. Two years ago, the road which was only partly paved had been completely paved all the way past the turnoff to the campground. The road used to go right through the front yard of a ranch. Now it goes around the ranch. What a difference that paved section of the road going up the hill makes.

June 2018 – Rally at Eagle Lake North BLM Campground

Don Williams, SNU President

Eagle Lake Rally: Gail and I can say we had a great time in June; first outing with our repaired Airstream. A few quirks to have C&G fix but it performed well for our 2200 mile holiday. Our first stop was not at our previous turn around point past Fort Independence (thank God)! Instead we drove north in clear blue skies 350 miles to the Willow Springs Motel and RV Park just outside of Bridgeport, CA. A short 1⁄4 mile walk found us at the Virginia Creek Settlement Restaurant for a great meal. Friday’s leisurely 230 miles drive found us arriving at Eagle Lake in early afternoon. Handshakes, hugs and greetings with SNU members followed by introductions to Bruce, our newest canine family member, led to a happy hour and pot luck meal with the everyone at Rally Central, Jerry and Dyann’s Airstream MoHo. On a whim, guest Joe Smedley #2999 from Florida, drove 3000 miles to attend our SNU rally.

There is a rumor that he was looking for courtesy parking on his way to the International in Salem but I like my story better. Saturday started with moderate temps and blue skies but clouded up for a predicted 6 PM rain shower. It never materialized but sprinkled that evening with some small showers thru the night. We had 6 rigs present and the BLM campground almost all to ourselves. There were lots of unused level sites near us and some of the ridge top sites (requires a short walk to Rally Central) offer great views of Eagle Lake. I would have tried to catch our meal for Saturday if we had arrived earlier!

On Sunday Gail and I went our separate way following a road less traveled, Joe might have followed us but his desire for a large RV park with laundry dictated a different route. We headed northeasterly up CA-139 to Adin, CA-299, then on to Alturas and US-395 into Oregon. Clouds, light to steady rain and temps ranging from 47 to 57 made it an ideal day to travel. Did I mention the dry lakes, there weren’t any! This is the first time we have traveled past Honey Lake, Goose Lake and Lake Albert when they were filled with water! We broke away from 395 at Lake Albert and headed northwesterly for Salem. A brief stop for respite at the Summer Lake Rest Area treated us to a short slushy hail-storm (it didn’t even make noise on the Airstream). We stayed the night a few miles further at Ana Reservoir RV Park with full hookups and a laundry (you should have followed us Joe). 211 miles for the day.

Monday found us arriving at the WBCCI International Rally in Salem a day early but we pulled strings. In reality, Gail being a committee chairperson (Flea Market) and I responsible for setting up the WBCCI Amateur Radio Station but no committee chair privilege, we were parked that day instead of waiting overnight in the Bull Pen. 250 miles this day.

Diane Leipper

We had a guest all the way from Florida at the SNU June Rally at Eagle Lake. Joe Smedley #2999 was on his way to the WBCCI rally in Salem. He called Bryan about courtesy parking and Bryan told him we were heading to Eagle lake and that he was welcome to join us. Joe showed up on Thursday afternoon. SNU members that showed up on Thursday were Bryan & Diane, Jerry & Dyann and Gary. Don and Gail arrived on Friday. When we arrived on Thurs there was no camp host. He showed up on Friday. This is his first camp hosting job. Apparently a ranger had approached him when he was camping at Rocky Point. Lawrence will be the host at the North Eagle Lake campground for the next four months. We filled him in on the campground and invited him to join us for dinners and coffee.

As usual for an SNU rally, food and a morning campfire were highlights of the rally. We had KFC on Thursday and shared meals with lots of great food on Friday and Saturday. Gail had brought a bunch of homegrown oranges right off their tree. What a treat. They were sweet and juicy.

Don got the award for advanced SNU leveling at this rally. The parking spot he chose required quite a few blocks to get his rig leveled. Most of our time was spent relaxing or visiting with Joe and Lawrence. The weather cooperated and we only had to contend with a few bugs. Joe, Don and Gail will be heading to Salem after the rally. Safe travels for them and for the rest of us heading home on Sunday.

July 2018 – Rally at Weed Heights

Diane Leipper

Cloudy afternoons with a little wind and even a few sprinkles helped cool things off at the Weed Heights rally. Everyone’s air conditioners, even the Leipper’s 43 year old A/C worked fine to keep temps inside our Airstreams comfortable. We had a small group of participants but that just meant plenty of time for socializing, relaxing and getting a few little odd jobs done in our rigs. Participants included Bryan & Diane, Jerry & Dyann and Gary & Anita. We had our usual shared meals and coffee with goodies in the mornings. The highlight of the weekend was Saturday’s Nevada surf-n-turf dinner hosted by Jerry & Dyann with contributions by the rest of us. Jerry cooked a specially marinated roast and shrimp on the grill. Gary & Anita contributed a nice tossed salad. Bryan & Diane contributed some steak fries and ice cream with a choice of strawberries or root beer for floats for dessert. After a delicious feast we sat outside enjoying a beautiful cool evening. This was the 10th consecutive rally the SNU has held at Weed Heights. Hopefully the park will be the site of many more SNU rallies in the future.

August 2018 – Rally at Glass Creek

Don Williams

Rally Report, Glass Creek - It’s Sunday night and the SNU Glass Creek Rally between Mammoth Lakes and June Lakes has come to a close as members and friends drifted away throughout the day. All were gone by the time Gail and I returned from our 4X4 adventure (see our Adventure Sidebar). View our photos on the SNU website or on our Facebook photo albums at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNevadaUnit/ .

Thursday: The rally started on a high note with the Thornburgs and Leippers scoring a pull through site and large picnic area for our Rally Central. Gail and I arrived just minutes later getting a semi-shaded site flanking Rally Central (need the AM sun for solar). The Lapham’s got in about supper, giving us 5 rigs in attendance by evening.

Friday: Morning came late for Gail and I, making up for lost sleep during the week, but friends and coffee awaited us without criticism. Overnight temps in the low 40s quickly warmed to short sleeve weather in the mid 80’s. Mid morning, Joan and John headed up Glass Creek past the camp road’s end along an informal trail to reach Obsidian Dome near our rally site of many years. Gail, Mongo, Bruce and I followed in their footsteps after lunch but our team separated when it became steep and slippery. I soldiered on alone to reach the north dome but stopped several hundred metres short of the Obsidian Dome camp. A couple of pictures documented my ascent (incase my recount of my success was questioned) and I returned back to camp in time to nap before more arrivals; Terry & Eric, Jodi & Cindy and a new friend Bob in his late 90’s Airstream B-van.

As is our custom, we celebrated with an SNU potluck dinner; barbecued meat balls, fruit & chicken salad, Asian spaghetti salad, pasta casserole and carrot cupcakes for dessert! After dinner I made a short visit to Jodi and Cindy’s trailer to make sure they kept our Saturday morning brunch in their schedule. Short turned into a 2-1/2 hour conversation on batteries (theirs was at 11.9 volts!), generators, inverters and solar panels, I promised a generator in the AM and headed back home.

Saturday: Coffee and sweet rolls appeased those with an early appetite while we awaited our Brunch, Sausage and Egg Bake, by chef Gail! I had earlier setup our Honda to charge the Batteries in Jodi’s Pendleton (I didn’t tell you earlier!) so we were all free to relax in camp or explore the wooded forest, domes and craters of the Eastern Sierras.

The evenings potluck supper featured Chili Verde & tortillas, chicken with rice & black beans, pico de gallo, potato salad, green bean casserole and cupcakes! At twilight the Lapham’s fire beckoned us to prepare a second dessert of roasted marshmallows and S’mores.

Sunday: A brief breakfast of coffee, sweet rolls and donuts preceded the departure of our friends. Great weather, great fellowship, GREAT RALLY; come help us do it again next month in Lassen!

Adventure Sidebar, Domes, Vistas and Craters

Terry & Eric left camp before breakfast to hike Rainbow Falls, Jodi & Cindy headed off to fish and Gail and I toured the domes, peaks and craters dotting the Mammoth – June Lakes landscape. Our first destination was the SNU Obsidian Dome camp. Road conditions were as we remembered until the last mile of one-lane. The potholes, humps, dips and ruts left exposed rocks, roots and brush lining the road took what the SNU once classified as a #3 or “test your skills” or #4 “ adventurous” to a difficult #5 “Jerry site”. I would have needed a spotter to negotiate the road conditions with the Airstream.

Hartley Spring Campground, our next stop, was a nice surprise. It had 25 spacious sites, most large enough for two, sometimes 3 rigs; only 3 sites were occupied. It would make a great alternative to Glass Creek. The road was in good condition and the steep portion after the turnoff was paved.

Now freed of our SNU scouting obligations we headed straight east on Bald Mountain Road. Labeled as an “Improved Road” it is suitable for passenger cars (maybe)! We especially disagree for the last mile or two of what I’ll call the “summit approach” where we used 4X4 Low range and Low-Low at times. The Bald Mtn. Lookout rewarded us with great vistas although some smoky haze was seen to the west. The housing for staff at the Lookout had not been used in years but off to the east was a small summit hut or cabin stocked with canned goods, bunks, a fireplace and current visitor’s log.

Once down from the Lookout, we headed northerly over Logging Camp and Crooked Meadows Roads to CA-120. At the highway we reconnoitered the countryside and maps to head for the Mono Craters. A slight misstep in a meadow found us 4-wheeling down a forest road that followed an old logging railroad bed to the Mono Mills (historic) site. Our last hurrah was the most challenging; IN24 was at times a narrow two track between brush and small pines along the roadway passing the eastern slope of the Mono Craters. The roadway widened after five miles to cross the East Crater Sand Flats giving us views of the chain of craters. Two miles beyond, we regained the Bald Mountain Road and shortly after US-395 for a sprint back to Glass Creek. Our truck was cloaked in dust and suffered some minor desert pin striping but that paled to Dyann’s description of their recent trip to Jarbidge; another Great Adventure! See the photos

September 2018 - Lassen RV Resort & Bistro Rally

Don Williams

Our Lassen Resort hosts’ Jasmin and Phil and our own SNU Trustee, Randy Grossman, did a great job on our 42 nd Anniversary Rally (not the 52 nd as I stated in September). Five campsites surrounded Rally Central with 5 more on the perimeter; all great sites with a combination of shade, sunlight, water, electric and sewer at each! With 11 rigs total we had a great time; in attendance were Baleme, Decker, Grossman, Haskett, Lapham, Larson, Leipper, McDonald/Thornburg and their guests and Williams. Most were already gathered at Lassen when Gail and I arrived Thursday evening. Our timing was perfect, just before everyone cleared the food and casserole bowls from the dinner (picnic) tables. It left a little daylight for me to up the Airstream.

Friday:

John Lapham took a morning fat-tire bicycle ride to prepare for his and Joan’s Saturday golf game. At Noon we rode, sauntered and walked to the Bistro dining room for our Friday lunch of fried chicken, pasta with chicken, shrimp and salmon and a garden salad. Our afternoon. We left with large containers of our Bistro leftovers allowing some to forgo their contribution at our evening potluck. Our Washington State member, Russell Decker, made an attempt to serenade us but we succumbed to sleep from the days’ two large meals.

Saturday:

I should note that Bryan continued his popular morning bottomless coffee carafe throughout the entire rally but some passed or ate light on the Saturday breakfast treats in anticipation of Randy’s Waffle Brunch in the resort’s screened patio dining area. He really out did himself and I especially appreciated the “real” maple syrup. It should be noted that I took far less than my norm at home to ensure others got some! We closed our brunch with a discussion of new and old sites for luncheons and next years’ rally locations.

The Bistro outdid themselves on Saturday’s dinner; we enjoyed organic salad with Mushroom Brie Crostini, Teriyaki Sliced Sirloin or Seafood Etouffee, Jasmine Rice, mixed vegetables and a dessert selection of Tiramisu or Peaches and Cream; all prepared in-house at the Bistro. We closed out the evening with a campfire and Russell’s wide selection of country and period music from our youth.

Sunday:

A brief breakfast of Bryan’s coffee, sweet rolls and other snacks preceded our departure from Lassen!

Post Script

In addition to the activities at the Lassen rally mentioned by Don on Saturday, after our lunch, local resident’s Mary and Will Snyder did a presentation on the history of the area. They are in the process of publishing a book highlighted many of the antidotes and pictures that will be included in the book. Also on Saturday, after dinner we celebrated some birthdays. Dyann had brought a birthday cake since her sister Ann and sister-inlaw- Mickey who were guests at the rally, had recent birthdays. After that Eric brought out his propane “campfire” and Russell serenaded us with another great concert.

October 2018 Rally at Ft Churchill

Dyann McDonald Thornburg

We had a fantastic time at the SNU October Rally held at Ft. Churchill State Park. The weather was great during the day but the nights did get a little cold. Those in attendance were: Gary Haskett, Bryan and Diane Leipper, Jerry and Dyann Thornburg, and Doug Dale. Also attending was Doug’s brother-in-law, Walter. Don and Gail were unable to attend; they made a unscheduled trip to the North Carolina coast to help Gail’s Mom with cleanup from Hurricane Florence. See the story in Little Known Facts <editor>.

We were very surprised at the number of campers who were taking advantage of the park. Most of the spots were taken and when someone would leave their spot would be taken by new arrivals almost immediately. Even with all the coming and going everyone was very polite and quiet which made for a wonderful time. Unfortunately on Friday morning Doug and Walter decided it was too cold for them the night before so they left to go somewhere that had full hook-ups. Bryan and Diane arrived on Friday. Dyann brought KFC for everyone for Thursday dinner, which was shared again on Friday. We had our usual potlucks on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, Jerry, Dyann and Diane took a trip to Yerington to check out the new Walker River State Recreation Area located on the old Pitchfork Ranch just south of Yerington. What a beautiful park! The three of us were highly impressed with what has been done to the area and what the future plans are for it. Currently they have completed the visitors center which had a lot of interesting exhibits to view and information available for all Nevada’s state parks. There is a full kitchen as well as an outdoor picnic area with a large grill and fireplace. The area around the center is grassed, has trees with a brook running next to it. Next to the center is a large graveled group area for day use as well as another area close to the river for day use. Next to that area is the dry camping area with covered picnic tables, large spots and close access to the river. Directly across from the visitors center they are in the process of putting in a full hook-up area. According to the ranger, there are plans to put in an area for campers with ATVs and off road motorbikes. We were told the area will be far enough away from the full hook-up, day use and dry camping areas so the noise shouldn’t be a concern. We decided this would be a great place to hold a rally in either spring or fall. It would be best to do one during those times is because right now there aren’t any shade trees which we are sure will be added in the future.

On our way back we stopped at the bakery in Yerington and got a lot of baked goods for dessert that night and to go with our coffee on Sunday before leaving Ft. Churchill. A wonderful end to the SNU 2018 Rally season with great friends, beautiful weather and a very successful scouting expedition.

November 2018 Luncheon at the Plaza

Don Williams

There is no rest for the wicked or the deserving when you put off something; I now get to write up both November and December luncheons. Gail and I attended our first luncheon at the Plaza Hotel in Carson City. We had a great turnout despite a major road closure of US-395 and adjoining roads near Washoe Lake that forced our more northern members and friends to drive east to Fernley, or through Virginia City up over the mountains or up to Tahoe and back down. Region 1 VP Cecelia Stansbury and first mate Bob attended, both to shore up our attendance and give us an update on WBCCI Region 12 news (thanks Cecelia and Bob). Gail and also had some road delays but I’ll cover that in a later article. The Plaza set-aside a private room for our luncheon that allowed us to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal and conversations with friends while we dined on their Petite Buffet of sliced lunchmeats, cheeses, breads, rolls, croissants, salads, chips and dessert. I noted that as our gathering came to a close that many members wrapped leftover breads, meats, cheeses and salad and headed home with their contraband! The highway department and electrical utility also provided some relief, completing their work on time and allowing a much shorter route home to the Reno area.

December 2018 Dinner at Mario’s Portofino Restaurante Italiano Christmas and Holiday Dinner

Don Williams

The SNU’s membership turned out for one of our first dinner timeslots. Mario’s doesn’t open for lunch so we gladly changed our luncheon format to dinner. Hopefully it brought us brownie points with the wives; I know that Gail always prefers an evening dinning out rather than lunch! Our meals ran the gamut from Lasagna, to Marsala, Salads and Veal; some shared a bottle of wine while other enjoyed a glass, a cocktail, coffee and water. All total we had 18 in attendance and celebrated the end of 2018 with each member having a chance at the secret SNU door prize. The Lapham’s were the winners with John in the background as Joan claimed their prize; The “Complete Nevada Traveler” travel book, a Nevada selection of jams, jellies and M&M look-a-like covered sunflower seeds and a customized “Sierra Nevada Unit” AAA map complete will all current and past rallies listed and marked by stars.
