“Itsy Bitsy Wally”

Sayings from a very young Wally Byam

Draft Card image 1 -|- image 2

I have spoken with Charlie Burke on several occasions. One of the items that Charlie found is the Selective Service, Draft Board or whatever paperwork that Wally had to fill out in 1918.Unfortunately the copies are very poor quality. I wrote back to Charlie a revelation. The paperwork is under the name of Wallace M. Davis. This raises a few questions. On a legal document, like a registration form for the draft, you must use your legal name. Was Wally actually adopted by his stepfather, Dave Davis? Did Wally legally change his last name to Davis? What was his reasoning for adopting the name of Davis? And when he changed his name back to Byam, what was the motivation? A bunch of unanswered questions. I also see that his uncle Roger Biswell, was a Captain in France.

Passport

Page with Dale listed as Wally's son

This is Wally's passport from 1948. It is the one he used on his first Caravan to Mexico and Central America in 1951. My passport didn't arrive before I left home. You will see that I'm entered as Wally's son in the visa. I am Wally's -hijo-.

Tentative Resume notes

I don't believe that Wally Byam ever left Lockheed during the Second World War. He was a department head. What he specifically manufactured I have figured out. But it was apparent to Wally that his background could be used for a productive effort elsewhere in the war industry.

I have several notebooks that Wally kept during the War and then packed away when the War ended. This specific pages is one of several that Wally noted down a potential letter for new employment. He felt that he had learned the methods of a large corporation and tied with his knowledge of medium and smaller companies that he would be an asset to a new, unspecified company.

A preview of notebook he had comments on starting up two businesses, rabbit ranching, and a camping gear catalog. Also there were serial numbers from the production line. There is also introspections on who he was personally. The notebooks give a rare introspection about the man Wally Byam.

I don't know the story behind this, but it is a cute idea.

Seaman's Union book cover

I found a post card or letter from Stel. She made a comment what a great sailor Wally was. It was in Europe and they were using a collapsible sailing boat that Wally had brought with them.
