Photo Processing

The photographs used for the various galleries throughout this website go through a standard process before they are ready for posting. Although this process can be time consuming, it provides better documentation and makes it easy to maintain and keep track of the photos when they are archived.

  1. Photographs are collected manually by means such as by copying image files from camera media or saving e-mail message attachments, or scanning.

  2. It is agreed either verbally or by other form with the photographer that copyright license is given to use the photographs in accordance with this website's photograph policies.

  3. Pictures are renamed so that the image file names include a photographer identification and a time stamp using the Exif tags data most cameras embed in image files when they are created. This name has a standard format that starts with the year, month, and day the photo was taken. The camera's identifying number and the photographer's initials are added after the timestamp. These become reference files that we use to create additional edited image files as appropriate for use on the web site. Tools such as jhead and ImageMagick are used to accomplish these tasks. In 2011 we updated the naming scheme. Photo names now include the day of the week and the time.

  4. Initial basic editing and name enhancement is done with The GIMP. Preliminary cropping and tone adjustments are done on the image and the edited file is saved with a descriptive tag added to its name. The resulting file name will be like 06jl22-008jt-sagehen-vista.jpg This translates to a picture taken on July 22, 2006 by Jerry Thornburg of a view from Sage Hen. This is an example using the 2011 naming system update. 2013aug08-thu-img_3809kng-dinnertime.jpg The time is deleted on the renamed image. This translates to a picture taken August 8, 2013 Thursday, by Bobbi Kingsland of dinnertime at the Obsidian Dome rally.

  5. The image files with descriptive tags in the names are then copied to a web site working area for selection and enhancement to present in a photo gallery. GQView is used to help cull the images and plan the presentation. Images that obviously should not be part of the of the final photo gallery are deleted from the working area. These include images that are out of focus, too dark, duplicates, or not deemed significant to tell the story intended by the finished photo gallery.

  6. Final editing may include additional cropping of the image to create a better composition or feature some aspect of the photograph. Cropping can also be used to eliminate partial body parts or other features that distract from the main subject of the picture. Other editing tasks include changing picture resolution to create images better suited for web page viewing. Gamma, contrast, and color correction might also be adjusted to brighten or highlight a particular photograph and improve its appearance on screen.

  7. Thumbnails and gallery web pages are then added to the working area for the image files. The web pages use the Extremely Simple Photo Gallery which was created so the images could be conveniently viewed with comments with a web browser. It is JavaScript code that most web browsers can interpret to present the images in an easy to view and navigate web page.

  8. The gallery is then prepared for publication through a process of commenting the photo gallery images, ordering the presentation, and other final gallery editing.

  9. When the gallery is ready for publication, it is uploaded to the website from the local working area via FTP and announced on the Zephyrs weblog in the New on SierraNevadaAirstreams category.
