Somebody wasn't thinking when they put this sign right in the center of the Information Desk where people are supposed to go for assistance. |
Overall it appears that WBCCI has not progressed much in the 49 years it has been holding International Rallies. In particular, there were no obvious changes or improvements from our experience at the Boise rally in 1998 and the Salem rally in 2006.
There were two basic components of the rally. One is the official component which dealt with the infrastructure, the management, the scheduled activities and programs, and the interactions with rally officials both paid and volunteer. The other is the informal component which includes impromptu gatherings, and participant interactions. At the 2006 Salem rally the informal component of the rally was great. This may in part be due to the fact that all activities were at the same location – parking as well as scheduled events and activities. You didn't have to get on a bus and ride off site for activities. People set up gazebos and held happy hours, shared BBQ's and enjoyed just plain social time with friends and fellow Airstreamers whether they had just met or were acquainted before the rally.
The official component on the other hand was marked by confusion, disorganization, bad planning, unproductive attitudes, and even potential health risks. Some of the general issues impacting the official component of the rally included pathetic information management, poorly trained and managed staff and volunteers, and inconsistent procedures and policies.
There is a lot that could be done with simple solutions and better utilization of resources and current technologies. The simplest idea is to learn from the past. Continually seek and listen to feedback. Continually implement changes and improvements.
Note: A separate review and comments page for each section of the rally was considered. As there is so much information and suggestions for each component we may add and revise this section over time.
