1957 Kentucky Derby – Indianapolis 500 Caravan
For every stop, almost, from here and around the
world I have post cards. I find this one from my Mother very
interesting. I didn't know that the famous Wally Byam "Gold
Airstream." had been part of the Derby parade in 1957. It did.
Just another accolade for Wally and his special trailer.

The card sez,
Louisville 5-3-57
Tomorrow is the big day. It has
been quite a trip. We had Wally's "golden chariot" in
the parade last nite & we felt like celebrities, bowing &
waving. The Derby Parade is on par with the Rose Bowl parade.
Today a few of us ere at the Derby luncheon – Louisville's Blue
Blood affair - pretty swank even Mr. Ford was there!

My experience on Caravans
are one of remembering the generosity of the members. If there was
a school, a hospital, a local charity, or a need for a donation
the beret was passed around. In May of 1957, the first official
Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500 Caravan hit the road. I have
here a receipt of money given to the Berea College in Berea, KY.
It wasn't much by today's dollars, but it meant a lot in 1957.
