This bit of SNU history was taken mostly from the April 2002 SNU newsletter written by Don Damoth. Frank and Steve (Stephanie) Burnham #13113 joined the Nevada Unit sometime in the early 1970’s. At that time the Nevada Unit was the only Unit in the state. Most of the members were from Southern Nevada but the Unit had an annual rally in Tonopah. The membership from the north grew more rapidly than that of the south and soon there were more members traveling 250 miles from the north than there were traveling 200 miles from the south. The time had come to split the Unit and the Burnham’s helped establish the New Sierra Nevada Unit. There had formerly been such a unit but the only remaining member was Alma George. She became another charter member of the new Sierra Nevada Unit.
Bryan and Jo (Josephine) Harrison #772, my grandparents were charter members of the Nevada Unit. They attended several rallies with the Nevada Unit including the 1963 “Birthday Party .“ This is from an article in a Las Vegas newspaper. “About 100 auto trailers containing members of the Wally Byam Caravan converged on Las Vegas and are camping near the old Race Track in what President Norville Kupper, state president from Henderson, called a Nevada Unit birthday party in celebration of the Nevada trailer travelers becoming members of the international group last year.” The Harrisons also participated in a 1965 rally in Belmont and a 1966 rally in Death Valley.
