The SNU has always welcomed visitors stopping by our rallies. One benefit of the SNU preference for dispersed rally sites is that it has enabled casual unannounced visits. This has sometimes led to new members as well as some interesting experiences. Two of the early visitors were Dave Gmur and Gene Baleme, both friends of Bryan’s. Dave came to a rally at Ft Churchill in 2000. Dave and Gene were both at a rally at Pyramid Lake in 2004. They both attended several rallies as guests before purchasing Airstreams and becoming SNU members. Gene went on to serve a term as President.

One of the first unique visitors was at our rally at Boca Springs in 2004. This is from the June 2005 SNU newsletter.

Another unexpected treat was that the new Airstream dealer in Reno, Mountain Family RV brought a new 28 ft Safari Slide Out to our Boca Springs rally. We all enjoyed meeting the owner Jon Whipple, and other members of his family. I think he found out that when it comes to Airstreams, SNU members are more than happy to talk his ears off. Of course, we all really appreciated his bringing the trailer up for us to spend time exploring. He also brought up lots of literature for us to browse through and a baseball cap for everyone.

This Airstream brought another surprise to the SNU. In 2006, when we pulled into our rally site at Walker River Resort there was an Airstream that looked very familiar. Turns out it was Roger and Janet Jeppson. They had bought the Safari that was at the Boca rally. Needless to say they became new members of the SNU. Mountain Family RV also brought a new Quicksilver to the 2005 Davis Creek rally. Jon and his family also came out to visit with us.

At a Lahontan Rally in 2006 a man drove out with his 1960 Safari that he was planning to sell. We had a great time checking out the trailer and talking with the owner. In 2008 at our rally at Sweetwater summit we were delighted by a visit from Alex the horse. His owner was out for a buggy ride and noticed our Airstreams so they came by for a visit. Roger and Janet Jeppson weren’t able to bring their Airstream to a rally at Pyramid Lake in 2010 but Roger drove out for a visit in his beautiful 1951 MG midget. We have had quite a few guests join us for coffee or dinner at rallies. An example was at the 2012 Obsidian Dome Rally. Virginia and her dog Boulder were camped near us so we invited her over for brunch.

Then there was Bruce and Kathy. This is Randy’s account of first meeting them.

An Amazing Story - Randy Grossman From the June 2011 SNU newsletter

It's good that we stayed an extra day at the Ft Sage rally. Here's why. Someone flew over our area on Saturday and noticed our silver. He contacted his friend who is looking to buy a new 19' Airstream. That person and his wife then found our rally on the Internet and came from Susanville on Sunday afternoon to talk with us about Airstreams. Their names are Bruce and Kathy. Vicki and I provided these very nice people with plenty of Airstream information. They will undoubtedly be attending one of our rallies in the near future when we will all have the opportunity to meet them and share, as we like to do, Airstream information with them. Bruce owns an award winning Cessna 170. He was invited to have it on display at the Reno Air Races

Bruce and Kathy attended our Ft Sage rally in 2013 in their new Airstream. Later that year, Bruce stopped by for a visit at Sweetwater Summit in his Cessna. Bruce and Kathy also provided overhead pictures of our rally at Pyramid Lake. Then in May 2013 tragedy struck. This is what I wrote on their remembrance page.

Saturday May 18th SNU friends Bruce and Kathy Rhymes died when their vintage Cessna crashed near Auburn CA. They had flown over the SNU rally at Eagle Lake earlier in the day and dipped their wings at us before heading to Middletown CA.

Members of other WBCCI Units were frequent visitors at SNU rallies. Starting with the Scott Family from Colorado at a Boca Springs rally in 2004. In 2013 Wheels found John, from Massachusetts and a member of the New England Unit parked at the airport in Minden and invited him to join us at Rocky Point, which he did. In 2014 brothers Jim and Chris visited us at Rocky Point. They had just recently purchased an Airstream and this was their first rally. Victor and Bobbie Kingsland and Marla Liberty from San Fernando were frequent participants in Obsidian Dome rallies. At the 2013 Obsidian Dome rally we set a new record. We had participants from five different Units! Several other members from other units have also been frequent participants in SNU rallies and events.

Sharing the Airstream experience with others is one of the highlights of owning and Airstream. It is especially rewarding when we have been able to provide encouragement to people who were considering purchasing an Airstream. That has happened several times and it has led to new members for the SNU. We also love to share the ins and outs, ups and downs of Airstream care and maintenance, especially with new owners that are just learning about their Airstream. And of course, we love talking about and bragging about what a great Unit the SNU is.
