50th Anniversary of the Sierra Nevada Unit 1976 – 2026

SNU Presidents

Comment posted on the SNU FaceBook page 3/13/2026 - In the 1990’s the primary offices of the SNU, including the president were mostly rotated among four people. While this helped ensure the SNU continued as a unit, it also created stagnation in how the unit functioned and what it did. A couple of those people were very adverse to any change. In 2001, I (Diane #772) was as asked to serve on the nominating committee. I nominated Fred Hersey, a relatively new member, to be president. I am proud to say that for many years the SNU was able to elect a new person to the position of president every two years. One of the things that made this possible was the revision of the SNU bylaws in 2002. The duties of the officers were pared down to the bare minimum required by the WBCCI bylaws and needed for the effective functioning of the SNU. In addition the SNU has always looked at the management of the unit as a team effort with all members assisting to ensure that essential tasks are carried out. As part of that team effort in the mid 2010’s Dyann Thornburg was instrumental in encouraging several people to serve a two year term as President. She herself had served a two year term as president and a term as secretary. It is in part, thanks to everyone who has served as president or in other positions on the board that the SNU is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary in 2026.
