SNU Rally Net

Note : This was an experiment tried out at the 2016 Lassen Rally as well as at some other rallies

Wherever you wanted to go, here you are!

On this network, there is no escape. All domain name searches are short circuited so they lead to this machine. Your efforts to get to your favorite websites will only result in showing a page from this machine.

This network is a stand-alone isolated service hosted on a $35 3 watt computer via wifi for the purpose of providing rally information and picture and file sharing among participants at an SNU event. There is no connection to the Internet or any other network. Security is minimal.

Upload your pictures! - A computer, laptop, or phone that implements Windows network protocols should be able to find the SNU file sharing service. The service provides access to a storage area where you can upload pictures or other items using standard file explorer applications.

There is photo album software on the service that can be run to add uploaded pictures to a web based photo album to share uploaded pictures. Contact the system operator for help on this. To see the pictures that are currently indexed and ready to view, see the SNU Rally Net Current Photos page.

The static files, including those from the SNU home page, from the SierraNevadaAirstreams.org have been copied to this machine. You can browse the photo galleries and other documents.

Security:

Anyone knowledgeable about the technologies used to provide these network services could easily take over the network. The primary protection is that this network is isolated and not available to anyone outside its immediate vicinity. We can hope the population of malicious nitwits nearby is negligible but good habits do need to be maintained.

Please only upload pictures directly from your camera with no changes or editing. This is to avoid the possibility that the pictures can pick up an inappropriate malicious software package. Include a plain text file created with notepad or vi or other simple text only editing program to describe your pictures and provide other notes about them and their use. This file should have a .txt extension.

Avoid downloading anything from this network. Only use a web browser to view pictures and documents and make sure your system has proper safeguards against malicious software.

You can use this service to trade files and material with others at the rally but due care must be taken by anyone copying files into or out of the network to make sure the content is only what it is supposed to be.
