2009 Renewal Notes:
None of those who have not yet renewed for 2009 participated in any Unit activities in 2008.
All of those not yet renewed have been contacted multiple times – several issues of the Unit newsletter have included dues renewal notices, all received a written notice of the need to renew dues and a written reminder notice, most were called on the phone, and some were sent an additional email notice.
At least three of those who did not renew this year plan to do so in the future. All support the SNU and appreciate being kept in the communications loop.
The two primary factors that seem to influence a person's decision to join the SNU are the website and the welcome received by those attending SNU events. This has been determined from communications both written and verbal. Both of these factors are indicators of success of the SNU decision in 2002 to go back to the basics of what WBCCI is all about – getting out in your Airstream and enjoying the fellowship of other Airstreamers.
The website provides a very comprehensive overview of the SNU including pictures of rallies, information pages such as What to expect at an SNU rally, and other documents describing the SNU and how it functions. By checking out the website potential members have a very clear picture of what the SNU is all about and are therefore better able to make a decision if it is what they are looking for in an Airstream group.
The SNU's effort to be welcoming and inclusive has been very effective in encouraging membership. Visitors stopping by to check us out, first time rally participants, guests, and new members are warmly greeted by all SNU members. Everyone is included in discussions and activities. Participation, input, ideas, and suggestions are invited and encouraged from everyone, new members, guests, and first time attendees as well as active SNU members.
There are many other elements that are behind the website and the welcome that are crucial to their success and the success of the SNU. Primary among these is consistency. In 2002 the SNU determined that the three priorities for the Unit were rallies, the newsletter, and public service announcements. Since 2002 the SNU has held rallies or luncheons, published a newsletter, and placed PSA's in local media outlets every month without fail. These three priorities have been adhered to even when there were only 3 (plus spouses) active members to carry out these duties, when a rally consisted of one member Airstream, and when only two members attended a lunch. Another aspect of this consistency is that any Airstreamer who contacts, or is referred to the SNU is added to the newsletter mailing list on a permanent basis unless circumstances warrant or removal is requested. The fact that sometimes months or even years later someone on our mailing list attends a rally or joins the SNU verifies the importance of this effort. SNU has also been consistent in it's reporting to WBCCI. Since 2002, the SNU has always submitted a complete rally schedule and a complete list of officers on time to WBCCI for the upcoming year.
Other elements which support the success of the website and welcome are the newsletter policies, rally and luncheon fee policies, a consistent point of contact for the Unit (phone, email and postal), and outreach efforts such as phone calls from the current president of the SNU. The foundation for this is a solid, well defined and documented infrastructure that is based on known and accepted standards of effective association management. These elements and the SNU's flexibility and ability to adapt while maintaining the core essentials of WBCCI and the Unit are instrumental in it's continued growth and development.
