Jerry & Dyann, Dyann's sister Ann, Wes & Roy, Bryan & Diane decided to test out a new campground over Thanksgiving weekend. Scout Camp is part of Ft Churchill State Park. It is located just across the river from Buckland Station off of alt 95 to Yerington. The campground is right on the Carson River. One of the primary reasons for this campout was to provide a trial run for Jerry and Dyann's 1986 Classic Airstream Motorhome. After purchasing this MoHo in June they have been busy refurbishing it and doing some maintenance and repair work. Check the link listed in this newsletter to see before and after shots. Thursday was warm enough and there was no wind so we had our turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings outside. Diane cooked the turkey in a roaster in the BVan using the generator for power. Friday and Saturday the weather made eating dinner outside inadvisable. The MoHo was the perfect solution. Warm and cozy with plenty of room for everyone. After our Thursday feast we ate leftovers all weekend which really simplified the menu planning. Friday was Wes's birthday. His daughter brought out a birthday cake so we had a nice little celebration for him. Despite occasional spells of ify weather, we had a great weekend. The trial outing of the MoHo was very successful. They only major problem was that the generator wouldn't produce power. The BVan generator kept things going over the weekend. Back home, Jerry discovered a circuit problem which was easily fixed so now the generator is set to go. We all liked Scout Camp and although our first attempt to hold an SNU rally there didn't work out, we all agree it might be a good idea to try again.

After two rather atypical rallies (The South Lake and the Region 12 Rally) it was great to have the October SNU rally at Scout Camp. This rally was unique too in that it had a very special happy ending. Scout Camp is part of the Ft. Churchill State Park. It is a dispersed area right on the Carson River. The weather was absolutely perfect, in particular, no wind! By Friday there were six of us at the rally. The Thornburg's and Leipper's arrived at Scout Camp on Monday afternoon. We all decided a few extra days in the boonies was a great way to relax after the Region Rally. We did get some work accomplished though. The park service had made a large pile of tree limbs and logs earlier in the year. There was still a large pile left so we loaded it in Jerry's truck and hauled it to our campsite. Jerry got out his electric chain saw and went to work. We had enough wood to keep a nice campfire going all week and burned the last of it on Sunday morning. The rally was the usual SNU event with morning coffee and goodies, inspirational naps, short walks along the trails, shared dinners, and all day campfires. We had evening serenades by cows and coyotes. We spent a lot of time visiting and sharing ideas and information including reviewing the Region Rally and winterizing your rig. The big project for the weekend though ended up being power systems. Wes and Roy woke up Friday morning with no electricity. Jerry and Bryan soon discovered it was a faulty GFI circuit breaker. After some clean up and tweaking, Wes and Roy were back in business. Paul, the Ranger came by every morning. His new assistant is a young woman named Kim. She apparently had lots of plans for tours and other activities at Ft Churchill and at Buckland Station. They would stop by for coffee when making morning rounds and we had a great time chatting with them. We had noticed that there was what appeared to be a stray dog roaming around. Wes and Doris had put out some food for it. Not long after Gene and Carmen's grandkids arrived, they had managed to befriend the dog. The dog seemed to be less than a year old, a mixed breed with huge paws. Needless to say, all of us took a liking to him and knew we couldn't leave him at Scout Camp. As it turned out, Wes and Roy ended up taking him after the pup had met with the initial approval of Sam, Lilly, and Hugo. Talking to Roy a week after the rally, she says that “Scout” has adapted very well, is gaining weight and that recently Sam took his ball to Scout to get him to play. The ultimate sign of acceptance. We'll all look forward to seeing Scout at many more SNU rallies, watching him grow and be a happy healthy dog

Thanksgiving was fantastic. The weather was perfect, very little wind, temperatures were in the 50's during the day and the 20's at night which is a little cold but great for sleeping. Jerry Thornburg deep fried a turkey that turned out delicious and everyone brought their favorite Thanksgiving dishes to share. Roylaine Warn's sweet potatoes were excellent and Doris Wheeler's pies were spectacular, as were Diane Liepper's salads and cranberry sauce. We were able to have a fire going all most the entire time with the wood that was broughtand the trees branches gathered by Diane, Wheels and Jerry. Needless to say Jerry's chain saw came in very handy again this time. It also looks like Scout (the abandoned dog Roy found at the October Rally and took home) has fit right in. Considering what a big boy he is Roy is doing a great job in handling him.

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect fall weekend for the last official SNU rally for 2016. The weather was mild with almost no wind and the trees glimmered gold in the sunlight. We had five rigs at the rally – Jerry & Dyann, Wheels & Doris, Bryan & Diane, Gene & Carmen and Fred and Wanda. Fred and Wanda are new SNU members and although they have a long camping history, this was their first outing with their 1972 Sovereign. It was a great shakedown trip for them. They learned a lot about the idiosyncrasies and quirks of their Airstream. There was a lot of expertise at the rally and both Fred and Wanda got an earful of helpful information and tips as well as some hands on assistance. One project Fred got done at the rally was to put his WBCCI membership numbers on his Airstream.
We’ve always suggested to new Airstream owners, whether it is a new trailer or older one, to get out and use it and in particular attend rallies, before you do much to it. You will have an opportunity to see what others have done and hear their stories of what works and why. Also after spending some time in your trailer you will have a much better feel for how you want to use it and what you need to do to make it fit your own style of camping. Fred and Wanda went home with a long list of projects and ideas. Although it is basically in good shape for its age, it will be interesting to see that Airstream develop over time. Fred is also a ham (Wanda says he always has been). His call sign is KF7QVB. With the inclusion of Fred, every man at this rally and one woman hold a ham radio license.
We spent most of the weekend just relaxing, enjoying the scenery and morning campfires, taking a few short walks and of course enjoying great dinners. Gene and Carmen took a nice long hike on the trails near the river. Bryan made some revisions and upgrades to the SNU rally WiFi site, in particular the process by which rally participants can upload and view photos. We also enjoyed some serenades by the local coyotes. Saturday was Doris’s daughter’s birthday. Although her daughter wasn’t at the rally, Doris made a chocolate cake and we all sang happy birthday to her. On Saturday, Gary & Anita came out for a visit. Later that day, Gene H. stopped by. Gene saw the PSA about the Lassen rally in the Carson Appeal and called us. He is looking to buy an Airstream and needed some information and resources. Apparently one of Gene’s passions is mules and he is a regular participant and attendee at Mule Days in Bishop. One thing he needs to figure out is how to tow both a trailer and a horse trailer in tandem. Gene got a lot of information from the rally participants and he was able to take a look inside some Airstreams to get a better idea of they are all about. One of these days hopefully, he will be at an SNU rally with an Airstream. After this weekend, most of us will be winterizing our rigs, doing some maintenance chores and looking forward to another great rally year in 2017.
