What a gorgeous weekend! Due to weather concerns the rally location was changed to Lahontan. We decided to try out the civilized campground at beach 7 rather than our usual dispersed area. Except for one other camper, we had the whole place to ourselves. On the downside, if you wanted to fish or go boating you were out of luck. The reservoir was empty! None of us had ever seen it that totally empty We spread out and took full advantage of the empty campsites. This campground has had extensive work done on in recently. The roads and campsites are paved, the restrooms (closed this time of year) and other facilities look fairly new and there were cement walkways to the facilities. After Thursday, the weather couldn't have been better. Warm days and very little wind made our Friday and Saturday dinners outside very enjoyable. The almost full moon made the evenings pretty spectacular. Jerry and Bryan brought firewood. A nice campfire took the chill off the mornings. We were delighted to be joined by LeRoy and Jeannie Waldo (WBCCI #5065) from Arizona. They were on their way home from the Region 11 Rally in Cortez. We had a good time swapping stories and hearing about LeRoy and Jeannie's travels. Saturday Roylaine came out for the day. Other rally participants were Jerry & Dyann and Bryan & Diane. This weekend was the CQ Worldwide Sweepstakes and Bryan was getting great ham radio signals from all over. Some contacts included Australia, Japan. Brazil and China. We later heard that SNU friend, Bruce flew over Lahontan in his vintage Cessna. He didn't see us in the trees but Diane saw him flying down the empty reservoir. All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

A little chilly and breezy but by Saturday we had five rigs at the Lahontan rally. First to arrive were Wheels & Doris, Jerry & Dyann and Bryan & Diane. Friday Gene and Carmen arrived with an assortment of grandkids. Baxter and Marlene planned to arrive Friday but a leaky water valve put them behind schedule. They did make it out on Saturday. Thursday and Friday were rather windy so we spent most of the time in our Airstreams. Friday dinner was held in Jerry and Dyann's Airstream. The big event on Friday was a visit from Steve and his wife Jan. They had planned on coming in their Motorhome but it is still up in Kalamath Falls having some work done. Hopefully we'll see them with the MoHo at the April rally at Ft Sage. If there were a contest for how many people can fit in a 26 ft Airstream, Gene and Carmen would get the prize. They had somewhere between four and nine family members out for the weekend. Gene didn't know for sure as some were coming and going. Two slept in the truck but the rest were on the beds and floor of the Airstream. Saturday Roylaine and her friend Jim came out and spent the day. They stayed for dinner Saturday night before heading back home. It looks like the SNU spring break-out rally was for the most part, problem free. Other than Baxter and Marlene's leaky valve and Wheels and Doris maybe needing new batteries, it appears everyone's Airstream was in good shape after sitting for the winter. There were no quick runs to town for parts, emergency supplies, or critical items forgotten in packing for the rally. We even had enough wood for daily campfires. I think we can safely say, we're ready now for a great year of SNU rallies.

The SNU Spring Breakout Rally at Lahontan was a success. Nobody sprung a leak, all systems seemed to be functioning, and nobody left any critical items at home. Before heading to the rally Eric put numbers on his and Terry’s Airstream. Eric also had to tighten a few screws and rivets. Bryan & I got to test out our new Buddy heater. Bryan has it set up to run off the trailer propane supply as well as portable bottles. It worked great and we were wondering why we didn’t get a Buddy heater years ago. Jerry & Dyann have made the biggest changes. Among other upgrades, they replaced the carpet and upholstery in their Moho. They sanded and refinished the wood flooring and polished the wood cabinetry. I think they also installed a new water heater. During the rally, several other projects got taken care of. These included replacing the kitchen faucet, replacing the fuses in the new captains chairs and fixing the kitchen light. We all got to enjoy Jerry & Dyann’s “new” Moho since it acted as the SNU mobile club house and provided a nice place for dinners. The weather at Lahontan turned out great despite some ify forecasts. Thursday in particular was almost perfect. Sunny, warm and almost no breeze. Friday evening a little system went through which didn’t amount to much except some wind. This was a rare SNU rally with waterfront parking. We were all amazed at the amount of water in Lahontan and it’s still going up. One of the entertainments at the rally was watching the water level rise on our little overflow area pond. Water rose almost a foot a day while we were there. Meals as usual provided another entertainment. We had pizza on Thursday. Friday & Saturday were our usual shared meals. A lot of the weekend was spent relaxing, enjoying the views and catching up on news, adventures, and future plans & projects. I think we are all set, ready to go and looking forward to the rest of the rally season

Lahontan State Recreation Area – Read the write up from members Dyann Thornburg and Diane Leipper about Lahontan we, the SNU, really had a great time. Gail and I would love to have been included in the “we” but an unexpected tire tread loss forced us to turn around and head from home only 223 miles from the rally site. Enjoy Dyann and Diane’s write up and visit with us in June about our abbreviated trip! - Don Williams, SNU President
The weather for the April rally at Lahontan was just about perfect. Quite a change from many past April rallies. The good weather not only brought out a nice group of SNU members, for the first time in years there were a lot of other people who chose this weekend to go camping at Lahontan. As for the SNU, we were delighted that some of the newest members participated in the rally. For John and Joan Lapham and Doug and Dawn Dale, this was their first SNU rally. They are all new to Airstreaming and although they have done some previous traveling with their trailers, this rally provided a great introduction to SNU rallies. Other participants included Jerry & Dyann, Bryan & Diane, Gary & Anita, Gene & Carmen, and Jim & Roylaine. We also had some visitors. Gary & Anita’s friends came by on Saturday. Wheels & Doris came out on Saturday and joined us for dinner. [7 rigs and 18 people is great ed./pres.] Friday, we got pizza from a local pizza parlor in Silver Springs. That may become a tradition for Lahontan. Great pizza and no dishes/utensils needed. Saturday we had our usual shared meal with a variety of tasty entrees, salads and desserts.
Rally participants had a choice of all sorts of entertainment. Bird watching was especially interesting this year. There were a pair of Great Horned owls nesting in a nearby tree, two Canadian geese who weren’t shy at all came and stayed for a visit. We spotted a Bald eagle flying past one morning and several Red Tailed hawks also flying around. The Pelicans who are normally around weren’t this year but they could have been somewhere else on the lake. The reservoir was the fullest a lot of us have ever seen it and allowed us to sit right outside our rigs and watch the fish jumping which gave us the opportunity to guess where we’d see them come up next. Friday night, Doug, Dawn and Gene drove over to Ft. Churchill for a program on night life in the park.
Saturday, John and Joan toured Buckland Station and the Orchard. John also enjoyed several bike rides exploring the territory around Lahontan. Several members enjoyed hiking here, there and everywhere. Then, of course, there were the inspirational naps, reading and most of all visiting and catching up on plans and ideas.
(Thank you, Diane Liepper for giving me your notes and writing most of the above comments about the Lahontan rally.)
After Saturday’s potluck I (Dyann) gave a brief update to some things that are going on for the SNU. We have been required to change the location for the May 2018 rally. It will now be held at the Crocker Campground near Beckwourth, CA. The reason for the change is due to the Prosser Campground not opening until Memorial Weekend.
Crocker is a great campground with lots of wildlife to see. It’s a wonderful place to hike, adventure and get out and see nature at it’s best. it’s my understanding that the road is now finished and paved all the way to the campground so it should be an extremely easy commute. Several of us will caravan to the rally so if you would like to go with us please let us know so we can give you the details. The SNU will also be doing KFC on Thursday. Please let us know when you plan to arrive so we have an idea as to how many people will be joining us for dinner. You can let us know on Facebook, email or call us. We look forward to a great turnout and hope to see you there! Oh and please be sure to bring firewood so we can have our usual wonderful campfires. I also told the group why our president, Don Williams and first lady, Gail William couldn’t make it to the rally. Apparently while on their way to the rally one of the tires on their Airstream separated and damaged the trailer. They ended up having to turn around and go back home. Hopefully they’ll be able to get the repairs completed in time to join us for the June rally in the BLM campground at Eagle Lake. We look forward to seeing them there.
