Camel Races

These Virginia City races started out in 1959 as a fictitious account in the local newspaper to fill space. The following year the races began for real and they have become a unique tradition on the Comstock.

Outhouse Races

Three person teams race down main street in wildly decorated outhouses

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Enjoy The Bard sitting in the sand with Lake Tahoe as a backdrop.

Tahoe Wooden Boat Festival

Events featuring classic wooden boats, some of which were used in the early days of Lake Tahoe to haul goods and supplies

I 80 East – Lovelock/Winnemmucca/Battle Mountain/Elko

Frontier Days - Lovelock

Begun in 1968, This event includes tractor pulls, booths, cribbage tournaments, and champagne cork popping contest

Old Spice Festival in the Pit – Battle Mountain

Making fun of a newspaper article calling Battle Mountain "The armpit of America", this festival is relatively new. Events include a tour of Newmont mine, bed races, and Old Spice arm pit contest

National Basque Festival - Elko

Held on the 4th of July weekend call Eko’s visitor center (Mon–Fri 9am–5pm; tel 775/738-7135 or 1-800/428-7143).

395 South

Bishop, CA Mule Days

Started in 1969 by two Sierra Mountain packers, the event has grown to an annual event that attracts over 30,000 visitors. The event includes all manner of mule events from barrel racing to dressage to packing contests
