The Sierra Nevada and Great Basin area is a wonderful study for those interested in earth processes. It provides many examples of volcanoes, faulting, and precipitate minerals that can be investigated and examined in any scale from the micro to the macro and from seconds to eons.
Maps, geography, and geographic imaging systems (GIS) are where the features of the earth interact with human societies. One of the distinguishing characteristics between the 'manifest destiny' explorers and the indigenous population was that the explorers were trained surveyors sent to map continental regions. They kept meticulous written records and measurements that were published so that others could expand and refine their discoveries and observations.

People who play with rocks notice patterns in how they are found and the fossils within them. These findings of patterns have resulted in a classification and categorization that is called a geologic time division.
