This was a tenth visit of the SNU to the south side of Obsidian Dome. See the photo gallery! The road to this place is a bit iffy and larger vehicles would be in for some nail biting situations. Next year, the SNU plans to transfer the rally site over to Hartley Springs nearby. That […]

Here’s a possible place to stop if travelling on US 395. It’s just a bit north of Bridgeport 38.2973N 119.4470W off Little Walker Road on Molybdenite Creek. See the photo gallery of the Toiyabe National Forest Obsidian Campground Google Maps provides directions from US 395 that seem to go around the long way. It appears […]

One way to get out of the July heat is to camp at elevation. Obsidian Dome is at 8,000 feet and that does make for nice cool nights. The SNU spent a weekend there again this year. See the photo gallery! Thanks to Roger, Randy, Dave, and others who contributed pictures. For a photo gallery […]

Using the maps.google.com site, you can see the Obsidian road intersection with US 395. Anita notes that there may not be turn lanes so you need to be careful about traffic. (latitude 37.774798, longitude -119.014281) [UPDATE: yes, nice turn lanes to get out of traffic to turn is good, but no acceleration lanes so getting […]

The WBCCI Sierra Nevada Unit had a rally at Obsidian Dome. This is in the dispersed National Forest Camping near Lee Vining. Its another one of those camping experiences where you head down the trail trusting the SNU scout (Rick) to know you will be able to traverse the road to a good camping spot. […]

Here’s an ‘official campground’ between June Lakes and Mammoth See the photo gallery! ForestCamping.com says “The campground has the feel of dispersed camping along an amazingly organized maze of roadways. Many camp sites have a “circle-your-wagons” character – great family or group camping. Widely spaced among Ponderosa and Jeffrey pines and White fir with patches of […]

In 2015 the SNU moved down Glass Creek from Obsidian dome to just off U.S. 395. The Glass Creek campground started as just a place to park under the pines but popularity breeds civilization so now there is an effort to define roads and campsites. It is a very large campground with minimal facilities and […]

A big campground off US 395 between June Lakes and Mammoth was the substitute locale for the SNU Obsidian Dome get together. See the photo gallery! It is interesting that the campground was near full on arrival but thinned out for the weekend. The full timers and the weekend warriors with their toy haulers seem […]
